🌕 A Full Moon Celebration for Women in Music
Marking Five Powerful Years of Girls Twiddling Knobs and a New Chapter for Isobel Anderson.
The Event
On November 5th, under a glowing full moon, I had the honour of photographing the closing ceremony for Girls Twiddling Knobs, a brilliant initiative led by musician and researcher Isobel Anderson, that’s been championing, supporting and educating women and gender-diverse people in music for five years. More than just an event; it felt like a collective exhale, a moment of reflection and a spark for what’s next.
As the moon rose high over London and my old stomping ground of Shoreditch, the air at the brilliant Strongroom Studios where the event took place felt charged with gratitude, strength, togetherness and possibility; fitting for both a milestone and a rebirth for the visionary that nutured what has ended up being part community, part podcast and part education platform.
The celebration began with a speech from Isobel, talking about how Girls Twiddling Knobs came about- as is so often the case it was born through the intersection of creativity and the need to adapt. The audience was then guided into a full moon ceremony, grounding everyone in intention and connection, a stunning live performance from the innovative Afro-merm, filling the room with sonic beauty and finally a panel discussion with powerful voices from across the music industry. Isobel’s closing speech talking about her next chapter (new music on the horizon!) garnered both tears and a standing ovation.
Each moment carried the same message: community, creativity, strength, courage and an appropriate amount of defiance.
Behind the Lens
As is often the case with my event photography, I worked free-hand and with available light to honour the atmosphere and utilising a variety of lenses to cover all aspects and angles.
Reflection
Events like this remind me how photography can hold both celebration and transformation in the same frame. Five years is a milestone worth honouring and while Girls Twiddling Knobs is ending, it’s clear there’s more still to come.
Huge love and congratulations to Isobel and everyone involved for creating something that uplifts, connects and empowers and will no doubt continue to do so through it’s community and legacy.
Connect
If you’re planning a music, arts, or community event that deserves to be documented with care and creativity, I’d love to be part of it.
