Here are some recent portraits of and for multi-disciplinary artist Vanessa Farinha and singer-songwriter, poet and performer Breezy Lee. Both were photographed in Hastings, with Breezy’s portrait session happening on a very cold day. This didn’t prevent her from submerging herself into the English Channel in a beautiful vintage slip dress and bright ribbon.
Vanessa’s photographs were taken at her home on a slightly warmer day. I thought that the environment somewhat evokes are recent work about council estates and architecture.

I was just looking through my archive for photos taken in Spring and came across this shoot I did with musician Alan Mahon-Bouquet for his album One Man On The Line, released in 2023.
We took photos in and around Barkingside, an area of London that I’d never been to before. Part of our mission involved visiting Jakes Burgers, a legendary fast food spot. I also took a couple of photos of other people out on the street. Alan chose a photo of him peering over a railway bridge for the cover of his release.

On December 11th, the Hastings community came together to show solidarity with refugees, migrants and asylum seekers. Hastings is a coastal town overlooking The Channel - the treacherous bit of sea that many people cross or attempt to cross, often in small dinghy’s. It’s an issue that is often in the news, due to the tragic deaths of many people as they try to cross the channel, but also due to the attitude of the UK government towards these crossings, and towards migrants, refugees and asylum seekers in general. I went to the rally to show my support, but also to document some of the MANY people in the town, that are also in solidarity with refugees. The message is clear, Hastings supports refugees!

Lockdown 2.0 started for the South East of England (including Hastings) last week.
While I took quite a few photos from the last lockdown and even got featured on the brilliant Shutterhub, this time I’m aiming for greater discipline and consistency.
So I’ve set myself a challenge to take & post at least one photo per day from my camera (not my phone) throughout Lockdown 2.0.
A couple of weeks back I had the pleasure of capturing some event photography for Boiler Room x Ballantine’s True Music In The Round. This was the first proper socially distanced live music event that I’ve documented since the pandemic so it felt really exciting to be in among the action again.

It's quite a thing stopping people in the street or anywhere else in public and asking them for a portrait. I'm really only just learning to do it. It's completely different to asking people at events if they would like their portrait taken - generally people are used to seeing photographers at events and much of the time, welcome it. I decided to bite the bullet and start taking portraits of people in Hastings & St Leonard's, where I have lived since last year.
